Building upon the success of their 1st Molecular Engineering bootcamp in fall 2022, AIMEMS trainees held the Emerging Technologies in Sustainability Symposium, a full-day event held on September 5th, 2023, in the University of Chicago’s Eckhardt Research Center. Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME) trainees Emily Doyle, Jamila Eatman, Jireh Garcia, Yezhi Jin, Andrew Xu and Wen Zhuang developed the symposium to encourage attendees to critically think about their role in shaping the future of sustainability with an eye towards broader societal considerations. Participants included members of the broader UChicago community.
The symposium kicked off with a trainee-led overview of some of the most-pressing sustainability challenges impacting society. Key highlights included guest talks on life cycle analysis by Dr. Jennifer Dunn of Northwestern University and energy storage technologies by Argonne National Laboratory’s Dr. Venkat Srinivasan; a panel discussion on emerging sustainable technologies from a variety of experts in and outside of UChicago; and case studies for participants to delve further into a chosen sustainability challenge. Engagement was high, with lively discussion and valuable connections made.
